Beyond good intentions: using ChatGPT to plan your New Year’s resolutions

New Year’s resolutions have fallen out of fashion, haven’t they? It’s easy to make them but hard to stick with them.

Nevertheless, I still make resolutions each January — I like the hopeful feeling that comes with refreshing my priorities for the coming year. And this year, I’m using ChatGPT to help me plan for success.

For 2026, my resolutions are to get my fledgling business started (learn AI for writing and everyday tasks!) and to eat healthier, particularly more nutritious lunches and fewer sugary treats.

If you’re also thinking about New Year’s resolutions for 2026, ChatGPT can be your coach. Use it to think through what you want and how to get it. For example:

  • Identify one or two priorities that you can realistically change or accomplish this year. Do you want to start something new, change what you’re already doing, or let something go?
  • Create a plan that breaks down your resolution into time-bound steps. Turn wishful thinking into a SMART goal, daily routine, or system you’ll follow through on.
  • Anticipate obstacles (like travel or busy weeks) and brainstorm strategies to handle them in advance.
  • Create simple methods to track your progress and to review what’s working and what needs adjusting.

ChatGPT can also help with the practical details of your resolution, like:

  • A weekly meal plan and grocery list to get you eating healthier
  • A realistic monthly weight-loss plan tailored to your lifestyle
  • An evening wind-down plan to help you sleep better
  • Practical ways to be more organized or to de-clutter
  • Ideas for a new job or career based on your skills and interests

AI can’t do the work for you. It won’t drive you to the gym, cook you a healthy meal, or clean out your office (at least not yet). But it can help you set yourself up for success.
