ChatGPT emojis: Love ‘em or hate ‘em?

  • by

To ✨ or not to ✨, that is the question.

ChatGPT (and similar Gen AI tools) love to sprinkle those little Unicode emojis into your text. But it’s not always wise to use them.

Why does ChatGPT do this? Is it trying to be cute? Actually, yes. Emojis are meant to make the tone friendlier, emphasize emotion, or draw attention visually.

Sometimes that’s fine, and other times it’s a terrible idea. ⚠️

In defense of emojis, they can:

✅ Add a warm tone to posts that are meant to be informal and conversational.
✅ Help make text easier to scan on busy platforms like LinkedIn.
✅ Clearly emphasize things you want readers to notice (like this list).

But here’s where you can run into trouble:

🚫 Emojis can feel forced, juvenile, or flippant, depending on the context.
🚫 They can make text created by AI look even MORE AI-generated.
🚫 Because emojis are so ubiquitous, they can make your text look like everything else online.

How to decide when to use emojis and when to skip them:

📌 Audience: Are you writing for friends? Your boss? A potential client? Just like you’d adjust the tone and level of formality for different readers, consider who’s on the other end of your posts before adding emojis.

📌 Platform: Emojis are more commonly used on some social media platforms than others. Pay attention to the channel’s norms.

📌 Purpose: Are you writing about a sensitive or serious topic? Skip the emojis. Something more fun and frivolous? Up to you.

📌 Personal voice: If you wouldn’t say it with an emoji naturally, skip it. Otherwise it will feel inauthentic.

Just like everything else AI-related, use your judgment and don’t just use what ChatGPT gives you. Emojis aren’t inherently bad, but it’s easy to overuse and underthink them. 💡

Just for fun, here are some of the most bonkers Unicode emojis I’ve come across:

🪳- Cockroach?! No thanks.
🪠🧻 – Hard to think of a professional use for these, unless you are a plumber.
🦫 – A beaver, why not?
🧄- Garlic to keep vampires away from your posts.
🧽- A sponge, I think? Or a Nutter Butter? Not entirely clear.

I’d love to hear your opinions. Emojis: Love ‘em or hate ‘em?
